Delaware Seashore

Home Up

October 1, 2004

We arrived at Delaware Seashore State Park on Friday, October 1st.  Our campsite is situated on a barrier reef island with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Indian River Inlet on the other side.  It is absolutely beautiful.

There are seagulls all over the place.  The fisherman fish off the side, into the inlet or they are on boats.  The current is so strong that they fly down (or up) the river at about 3 knots.  It is strange and scary to us to watch - it appears they have no control  over their boats and there are a lot of boats!

The weather has been overcast and today is absolutely poured.  The forecast for tomorrow is great, as is the next 5 days.  There is a fair tomorrow called "Coast Day", at the University of Delaware's College of Marine Studies in Lewes, DE.  They are advertising all sorts of ways to eat crabs!!  There is the 15th annual crab cake cook-off, Presidential Crab Cakes, Creamy Crab-Brie Crab Cakes and all sorts of "crabby" food - now if I only knew if I liked crab cakes.....

There will be lots of lectures, discussions and videos.  A special one is called "Marine Mammals and Sea Turtles in the Mid-Atlantic" - Norm and I both thought the Weins' would enjoy that one due to Thumper, their pet tortoise. (They are also talking about educational events for children, but .......)

One day we drove south on Route 1 and went to Assateague Island and Ocean City, Maryland.  Assateague Island is home to wildlife galore and we were fortunate to see lots of wild horses and a sika.  A sika is a miniature elk, even though it looked a lot like a deer.  We walked to the beach - it was deserted and beautiful.  The day was warm and the sun felt lovely.  On our way back to Delaware, we stopped for lunch at Phillips in Ocean City.  Norm remembered this restaurant from 30 years ago and we had a great lunch.  We also walked on the boardwalk a little bit...reminded me of Island Beach State Park in NJ.
